Updating your exterior can be an opportunity to update your home’s color palette, so if exterior painting is part of your remodeling project, take time to plan your exterior colors. Color harmonies are a good starting point for choosing the right colors. Here’s how it works.
Any pair of colors that look good together is a color harmony. There are several ways to pair these colors, but one of the easiest and most effective ways is to use a color wheel. Once you have settled on a color set, you can then apply it to your plans, which comprises hand-drawn sketches, color swatches or computer-aided drawings.
There are three traditional color sets for exterior color palettes: red and green, orange and blue, and yellow and purple. They share a common trait: each color is paired with its opposite in the color wheel, called their complementary. There are other, more complicated variations, such as monochromatic and analogous colors. Regardless of combination, you want one applied to your roof and the other for exterior painting.
Before you commit to a choice, account for permanent components like brick or stone or roofs with long life spans, like clay tiles. If you have these, look for colors that complement them. For example, if you have a red brick exterior or a terracotta roof, focus your search on shades of blue to complement it. This is because it’s easier to replace the complementary color than permanent exterior components.
